Wines from Unusual Vines

Presented by Greta Mountain and Stephen Widdall

Castellore Ribolla Gialla Spumante Brut

The Ribolla Gialla is an ancient north-eastern Italian white grape and can be traced back to the 13th century and to the province of Fruili-Venezia-Gialla. The grapes are used to produce light- medium bodied unpacked wines with floral aromatics and a stony citrus palette. Perfect with oysters, grilled fish or olives.

Available from Aldi.

La Orphica Seleccion Sintonia 2022

This wine is made from ripe Garnacha (Grenache) and Bobal grapes where gentle whole cluster press has resulted in an attractive pale rose colour.

Both the Grenache and Bobal grapes are often blended in Spanish wines. Although not uncommon grapes, we thought this wine was so good we would include it!

Harmonious aromas of ripe raspberry and juicy wild strawberry together with notes of fresh herbs and a well balanced acidity. Drinks well with garlic prawns, grilled octopus, fried calamari, asparagus, salted almonds and crisps

Available from Naked Wines.

Stefano di Blasi Zibibbo-Catarratto 2021

The grapes in this wine are Sicilian and grown in the South of the island - the historical Zibibbo grape and the deliciously fresh Catarrato. The Zibibbo grape is also known as the muscat of Alexandria, thought to have been cultivated in ancient Egypt. The Catarrato grape can make full bodied wines with lemon notes.

A rich wine that oozes tropical fruit flavours and sensational aromatics. Undoubtedly good with spicy food or a Sicilian Cous Cous.

Virgile Joly Bourret 2021

Terret Bourret is a traditional grape variety from the edge of ‘Etang de Thau’, one of the oldest grapes in Languedoc. It is combined with a touch of Picpoul in this wonderful wine which is organic and a Bronze Medal Winner at the International Wine and Spirit competition 2022. A light fresh wine with elegance and depth. Serve with shellfish or grilled fish.

This bright fruity Austrian red wine delivers luscious cherry and fruit of the forest flavours. A subtle twist of vanilla spice from the oak ageing accompanies the fruit to the finish. Try with grilled meats or vegetables.
